Maison des traditions

rue du Bourg 20, 1663 Gruyères, Gruyeres, Switzerland

I want to preface this review by saying that we are from trendy old London, and rather fashionably, don't eat junk food and try to eat super healthy. We enjoy fruit, veg and fresh food from every nation and love spices. We are not fussy and appreciate that different people like different flavours though. Gruyeres is lovely and even on an overcast day, the views are fantastic. You can see for miles and it's very peaceful and quiet. Now - we were staying at the sister hotel to this restaurant which entitled us to a discount and on the basis all the restaurants seemed to have identical menus, we decided to try this one.Why would ANYONE pay 25-60 EUR for a pot of warmed cheese and some day old bread? Seriously? What is going on?We ordered 'Rosti' the other local 'speciality' which was as suggested by the name - some fried up potatoes - 16EUR !and here's the best bit...3 EUR for an egg on it. The egg wasn't made of gold before you ask. And it didn't have a toy inside it either. The food is unhealthy, fattening and totally stodgy and flavourless. To see so many people wolfing it down, you wonder if you have stumbled in from another planet. Planet Thin perhaps?Thank good they did a decent salad. Clearly the Swiss don't have a clue about food. The restaurant has a problem with flies too. Lots and lots of them everywhere. My kids seem to be scared of creepy crawlies which I find mildly annoying anyway so I didn't want to make a fuss about the flies and have their fears vindicated but honestly - it wasn't good. Nice girls serving. Traditional wooden interior. Lots of flies. If you look after yourself and your body, don't expect a decent meal here - all the restaurants are the same so this one is not being singled out. They think it's 1955 from a nutritional point of view.Sorry.
