Zum Bettelstudent

Went there for a lunch. Had a table on a nice terrasse. Portions are big, food is fresh and tasty. The restaurant itself is really huge and furnished in a traditional manner.

years ago, the "bettelstudent" was my favourite restaurant in vienna. its backfleisch and vogerlsalat were fantastic, it was a very homey atmosphere and the best pub to eat in.things have changed since then. don't get me wrong, the various dishes are still tasty and typical of vienna. the beer is still cold and on tap. the apple strudel is still great. it just doesn't transport the feeling of "wirtshaus und wohnzimmer" like it used to.am i returning every time i am in vienna? sure, after all, it's still the good old bettelstudent.

We were taking a walk from our hotel a few blocks away and came upon Zum Bettelstudent. We stopped in for a beer, got to talking with the friendly bartender. Though we had dinner reservations elsewhere he showed us a nice menu so we came back the next evening. Very good food in substantial quantities for reasonable prices. And very good local beer on tap! Some tables outside under the large umbrellas. If you're looking for a local pub a bit off the tourist strip without tourist prices we highly recommend Zum Bettelstudent.

We entered by chance while walking in the neighborhood: a typical viennese tavern with a nice quiet atmosphere, a decent menu, adequate portions and tasty food. We tried the traditional wiener schnitzel and gulash and they were above our expectations, and at a very good price.

Somewhere for beer drinkers - which we aren't but needed somewhere in locale open on the public holiday. Waiter was unwelcoming, very unhelpful - we don't speak German and perhaps this was a problem for him. The food was pretty basic - not great. We asked to be seated away from the smoking area, which they did. There was a very friendly host - don't know if owner or manager but he was great improvement on the other waiting staff who couldn't raise a smile between them. There must be better places to eat if food rather than booze is your priority.

As we stayed in a hotel close by we stayed here a couple of times. I really like this place as it has a) a very good homemade beer (I prefered the "Hausbier hell") and an excellent local kitchen to a reasonable price. The service was very friendly and very helpful. I loved their seasonal specialties - like in May their Asparagus with new potatoes - very recommendable. The only downside is (but that you find often in Austria) is the smell of smoke from the entry lounge below - even with a glass door the smell is there...

Came here for dinner. The waiter wasn't very nice. The food was average. I got the gulash and my partner got the cheese burger. We both thought it was all pretty average. Wouldn't recommend it. Also, there is an inside area for smokers and smokers were smoking right by the non smokers area, we we could smell the sigarrets the whole time.
