I would like to give this 3.5/5 but Tripadvisor won't allow that so I've given it 3/5 as it may be a case of cultural appetites. In the UK, portion sizes are fairly generous on the whole, the same cannot be said of Laxmi! For the eye-watering prices you pay (even if the £ wasn't getting annihilated at the minute the comparative cost for a meal is still painful) the portions aren't great. Now, this may be due to the requirements of the Swiss people, perhaps they eat healthier smaller portions than the UK or perhaps Laxmi is trying to serve gourmet restaurant portions.Over the course of our five days in Lausanne we ate here three times - the food is tasty! We like our food spicy (I'm from Birmingham originally and my husband has lived in Birmingham in the past, we know our curry!) and on our first visit here our waiter asked "Indian hot or Swiss hot?" We replied Indian hot - we were not disappointed. The food tasted as though it had been adequately seasoned during the cooking process rather than a load of chilli powder added afterwards (as I've experienced in other establishments) One slight confusion (which was based on my experience eating curries all around the world) was that the vegetable biryani didn't come with a small vegetable curry - every other country I've eaten a biryani in the dish ALWAYS comes with a small vegetable curry. This was a variety of vegetables cooked with rice and served with yoghurt. For this you pay CHF 33 - that's roughly £25 for vegetable rice!! (Again, that's high with the exchange rate as it is currently but even so, with no vegetable curry that price is exorbitant!) We'd ordered this as we assumed it would be a slightly more substantial meal (my French isn't the best so I fully accept the responsibility of not checking and making the assumption that it would come with the curry based on my previous experiences) We then ordered additional mains as we were still hungry. The service is a bit hit and miss; first night we went we walked straight in and were seated - one waiter serving three tables and he seemed friendly but harassed; second night we pre-booked as we were eating later and there were a few more tables occupied but again with only one waiter (different from the previous night) serving - he was slightly less harassed but it was slow trying to order drinks and pay the bill; third night we hadn't booked as the previous nights were very quiet but this was to our disadvantage - we arrived at the restaurant to find the place PACKED! There were no tables for an hour at least. The waiter who'd served us the first night kept apologising but we explained it was our fault for not booking and ordered a takeaway. This took slightly longer than expected as the naan had arrived with butter even though we'd ordered it without BUT TO THEIR CREDIT they changed it before we became aware of the problem.I'd definitely eat there again as the food is really nice. As I said, for the price you pay the portions don't feel very good value for money but I understand they're competitively priced for Lausanne and Switzerland so it may just be a difference in portion control between Switzerland and the UK. Sadly, even though the meal came to between CHF 77 and CHF 91 for the different evenings we did end up snacking once we'd returned home. We're strict vegetarians and all of the mains are cooked separately with separate pans and utensils. We couldn't quite understand about the starters so stayed away from them just in case (some restaurants cook meat/fish/vegetable samosas/bhajis/pakoras in the same oil so the 'vegetarian' food is no longer vegetarian). If you can cope with the prices then I'd certainly recommend Laxmi's. Make sure you book to avoid disappointment!
