We ate outside because it was cooler than inside - but the inside looked charming, too. We ordered right away and the food was hot and tasty. Let's be clear, it was very basic - no frills - but hearty portions for sure. Two of us had the specials and one had the Rosti - that could have used a little more seasoning, but what's really not to like about potatoes, ham and cheese? Food was good. I had rosti (like scalloped potatoes but better) with tomatoes/cheese. It was a good-sized portion.Service was a bit slow. Outside seating available.
My son was jonesing to have fondue and or raclette while he was in Switzerland. After almost 10 days here we finally landed in Restaurant Steinbock in Basel. (What a great city to visit!) Service was fast and friendly. no rush. Most restaurants we visited were good like that. never rushing you to finish, pay and get out. My son and his girlfriend shared a plate of raclette and a small pot of fondue. They raved about both the meals. After eating our way through Switzerland, my wife and I was 'up to here' with cheese and bread so we didn't have either one. I opted for the "Rindsleberli Venezia, which is calves liver with rosti and a nice brown sauce. I liked it a lot, although I got looks from my family as if to say. "Ugh. Liver." But I love it. Done not like my mother used to make (think shoe leather.) To be fair, the cooking process was thought of differently back then. Now it's served medium. which is really nice and tender if done right. as it was here. The rösti was just ok. Actually, I never had rösti in Switzerland like my mother use to make. Hers (and now mine) were and are better that what I had in Switzerland. I like a lot of onions in my rösti and the few times I had rösti, they had hardly any onions in them. Kinda bland too. I always "kick mine up" a bit too. My wife had a bratwurst which had a similar brown onion sauce on it along with more rösti. It was good, but we both prefer the bratwurst (or weisswurst really) that are sold by street vendors. (St. Gallen brats/weisswurst seem to be the very best somehow.) Still, if you're hungry for some fondue and/or raclette. this is a good place for it. As with pretty much all restaurants in Switzerland. food is expensive.
I have spent there nice evening with good food and nice service. Prices like for Switzerland acceptable:) Good location.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, the food was good, the portions were large and the restaurant was in a very convenient location. The only downside was the fact that it was rather noisy when the room was full. But definitely worth a visit!
We had been looking for a good Swiss meal that was tasty and reasonably priced. We found it here. I had the vegetable rosti and my husband had the beef stroganoff with rosti. Our friends had two different varieties of rosti. All were great. Hearty portions, nice atmosphere, polite and helpful waitstaff. It was a great help that the menu had English under each entree. Our waiter spoke enough English for us to get any questions answered. Location is near the train station so it is easy to get to using the trams. So glad we found this place for our last meal in Switzerland.
If you want to experience the Swiss food this is definitely the place to visit. Situated conveniently at the main train station.
The rosti potato is a must, in this typical swiss restaurant. Loved it. The Geschnetzeltes are nice but in a small portion , even coming with some pasta. I did not get the pasta and asked for another Rosti.
